Tha Ton is in the hills, practically on the border of Myanmar (Burma) and almost at the top of Thailand. Its climate is cooler than most of Thailand, and locals bundled up in heavy winter coats and hats whenever the sun was hidden. Even we used long-sleeved shirts part of the time. The area north of here where Burma, Laos and Thailand meet is the "Golden Triangle" famous for opium production. Thailand in recent years has almost eliminated opium, pushing the business outside its borders.
